Boycott Beijing Olympics: Start from Taiwan

Guess one thing the Nazis and China have in common. The Olympics.

The 1936 Olympics was propaganda for the Nazis: attendence of other nations became an acknowledgment to their reign, the following trust and good impression lead to the lowering of criticism and economic restrictions, which boosted their power and resources, and eventually, all of that lead to the holocaust of the Jews.

China today, is obviously doing the same.

The propaganda of a better China has been thrown out throughout the news network of the world: the new China will strive toward peace, will understand the differences between conflicting groups, will support human rights, will save the environment. "One world, one dream" they call out, as they increase the missiles pointed at Taiwan, oppress the democratic bid for UN entrance of a country they do not own, as they reinforce the troops in Tibetan, and children continue to die in thousands in sweat shops and confined AIDS villages.

However, nowadays, to the people of the West whose only connections with the great giant of economy are T-shirt labels and lead-coated Barbie dolls, the idea of a second Nazi Olympics is as remote as worry of a coming storm on Jupiter. No sign of worldwide boycott is called upon. But the worst reaction of all is from the people in Taiwan. Under the threat of China, the most we did was jabber over the torch relay.

Unfortunately, we're not just on of the outsiders. The analogue of 1936 Berlin Olympics has a deeper and more chilling implication here: WE ARE THE JEWS.

The Jews were indecisive when they were considering whether they should attend the 1936 Olympics. When they finally did, they were received warmly; they went back home in glory. And then, they were tortured and killed.
If this is how the Olympics help people learn to understand each other in the promotion of peace, then there is little faith that the Beijing Olympics will help with the peace between the Taiwan Strait.

"One year to stop 1936 Berlin Olympics from happening again" states the Nazi Olympic worries from quite clearly: if we don't boycott Beijing, we're giving them the change to use this propaganda to strengthen its influences and power in the world, diminishing the restrictions the world could have on its human rights issues, environmental issues, and also the harming and poor quality of its industrial products. The sweet words of peace came out easily from Hitler. In fact, ironically, the Olympic symbol of brotherhood, the Olympic Flag and Olympic torch relay, was invented under the order of Hitler himself. China is now coating its deeds with the same honey; will we be lured?

While China is threatening Taiwan with its military, and boycotting Taiwan around the globe, it is downright insane for the Taiwanese to enter the Olympics, not to mention by the insulting name of Chinese Taipei. The sad thing is, hardly anybody in Taiwan realizes this at all. “Might it be,” a foreigner might observe, “that the Taiwanese are actually not under oppression at all?” Stop focusing on the torch relay, for the sake of our land, boycott the Beijing Olympics.

Afterwords:

Ah yes, last year, movements to stop the "Genocide Olympics" have yielded the good result of forcing China to stop backing up the Sudanese government responsible for the Darfur violences.
I know, I know.
Thanks to Mia Farrow's warning to Stephen Spielberg that he might "go down in history as the Leni Riefenstahl of the Beijing Games," Spielberg's letter to Beijing had its immediate effects (news article). This was a triumph for western activists: we can actually force Beijing to bow to international pressure!! Using the Beijing Olympics to bargain with Beijing on issues such as human rights is indeed helpful for some violations happening right now, but how will this strategy stop China after the Olympics? Throwing threats at the dragon before it grows wings cannot constrain it when it soars high above us all.

Beijing's step toward power should be stopped by the very people it oppresses. And only by this means, will the sound be heard clearly and sharply throughout the world. For it is true that there are no immediate threats to the West, people have acted nobly by caring about regions and people at the other end of the world. This also means that the protests are relatively weak.

But the roars of the victim will not be unheard.
